Rwanda to Diversify its Tourism Sector

Rwanda is one of the fast growing tourist destinations on the African continent. Best known for hosting the endangered mountain gorillas, Rwanda is turning out to be the best spot for adventure tourism. Rwanda‘s tourism industry is growing at a faster rate and this has also helped in improving and developing its sector in the country. Today the country is receiving a considerable number of tourists interested in discovering the tiny country also refereed to as the ‘Land of a Thousand Hills’.

Though the country experience some dark months of the 1994 Rwanda Genocide, 20 years after this tragic event, the number travelers taking safaris to Rwanda has increased as well as the revenues from the sector to the country’s financial treasury. The main factor which has helped in developing Rwanda has been mainly gorilla safaris carried out in Volcanoes National Park (PNV). In the past five years, the country embarked in a program to diversify the tourism sector and this has helped in boosting tourism in the country.

The country has added a portfolio of things to do to those traveling to Rwanda;

  • Cultural tourism including visits to the cultural sites and genocide memorial sites, local museums and past kings palaces,
  • Primates Watching – see chimpanzees in Nyungwe Forest and golden monkey tracking in Parc Nationale des Volcans (PNV)
  • Canopy Walks in Nyungwe Forest
  • Bird Watching in several areas of the country including the Congo Nile Trail

Also Rwanda’s main strategy is to mainly focus on the low numbers of the tourist arrivals which can help in bringing about sustainable tourism with in the country. Sustainable tourism is also the main pillar of tourism development in any country and this can help in the conservation and preservation of the national parks and also the wildlife which help in increasing the number of safaris to Rwanda.

Rwanda has also been exceeding the many targets with the tourism receipts which is expected to double this year, there has also been key investments in accommodation and the unique tourism products which have been made hence helping in contributing to the growth and sustainability of the tourism industry of Rwanda. It has also focused on the diversifying its tourism products as well as emphasizing the promotion of safaris with in the country. The supportive efforts which have been put in by the government have also led to the increasing numbers of tourists who come to Rwanda. This means that diversification is one of the main pillars of developing tourism in the country hence has increased the GDP of the country.

Rwanda is also well endowed with fantastic attractions which fascinate the safari tourists on their way to the country. Some of the attractions also include; the mountain gorillas in the volcanoes national park, the chimpanzees in Nyungwe Forest national park and variety of bird species in the Akagera National Park. The water bodies are also part of the main attractions in the country and these encourage swimming activities and fishing as well.
