Volcanoes National Park

Tucked far away in the north western part of the country, Volcanoes National Park is the main highlight for most trips to Rwanda. It is part of the Virunga massif and the main habitat for the unusual species of Mountain Gorillas in Rwanda.

Besides Gorillas, abundant Wildlife species including the notable Golden monkeys breathe life in the calm atmospheres of the Park. Leaving alone Wildlife, Volcanoes is home to five of the eight Virunga volcanoes such as Karismbi, Bisoke, Muhabura, Gahinga and Mount Sabyinyo along with the Dian Fossey Grave yard.

You can easily get to Volcanoes by road and it takes about 1-2 hours for the engaging drive from Kigali up to the park headquarters in Kinigi.

If you don’t fancy road transportation, you can book for private charters from Kigali up to Musanze town, but from Musanze it is a must you will continue by road up to Kinigi. When you talk about Volcanoes, travelers know it for Gorilla trekking, but there is a lot to relish once there.

Expect to engage in multiple activities such as Gorilla trek, Golden monkey tracking, volcano climbing and Dian Fossey hike. Just out of the Park is the Iby’wachu Cultural village, a prime locality visited for a glimpse of life of the Batwa people.

For those who wish to be of the Gorilla Trek in Volcanoes, this activity requires a permit which costs $1500 USD person. It is a must buy and valid for use by only one person.

Nyungwe Forest National Park

Are you after Rwanda’s beautiful primates? Nyungwe Forest National Park is the best place to start with. Of all parks in Rwanda, this is the far isolated from Kigali.

It takes about 6-7 hours to drive from Kigali up to this primate capital of Rwanda. Situated in the south western Rwanda, this park is occupied by Nyungwe forest, one of the prominent rainforests in East Africa.

It is a great shelter to multiple species including primates like Chimpanzees, monkeys, baboons, different bird species to mention but a few. Nyungwe forest is traversed by many trails that offer incredible forest walks to adventure lovers.

Apart from Chimpanzee tracking, Nyungwe treats travelers with canopy walks, forest walks and bird watching. All these pursuits offer endless views of different species, picture perfect landscapes and towering volcanoes.

Akagera National Park

If Gorillas and Chimpanzees don’t appeal, Rwanda is also famous for Big game. There is no any other place to go for these animals in Rwanda if it is not Akagera National Park.

This protected area sits in the Eastern region of the country along the border with Tanzania. Its covered area is composed of savannah grasslands, rainforests, lakes and shrubs where a number of Wild animals reside.

Lakes like Ihema are home to numerous aquatic species like crocodiles, hippopotamus and water birds. The list of activities to partake in this park include game drives, fishing and boat cruise.
