Rwanda Registers More Than One Million Foreign Tourists in 2014

According to figures given by the Office of Immigration and Emigration, Rwanda received almost 1,220,0000 tourists in 2014 and in 2013, there were 1,122,000. This difference of 97,000 visitors represents an increase of 9%.

Visitors from Europe increased by 1% and the number of visitors from the USA fell by 6% while the number of visitors from the Asia and Pacific region fell by 8%.

In the non-African market, the USA dominates the list with 24,488 visitors, the second place is occupied by India (13,008), the United Kingdom (12,320), Belgium (8,733) and Germany (8,228). Visitors from the United Kingdom and Germany increased by 1% to 4%, while the number of visitors from the USA, India and Belgium fell by 9%, 5%, 1% respectively.

In 2014, Rwanda welcomed 19,085 visitors who participated in the conferences. In 2013 there were 15,441, an increase of 24%. This category involves business travellers, with an estimated $29 million or 31% of revenue generated by business travelers and 10% of all revenue that was generated by tourism in 2014.

Tourism in Rwanda saw a 4% increase in revenue. Thus, according to the latest statistics from Rwanda Development Board (RDB), this tourism sector generated $304.9 million in 2014. And in 2013, tourism activities generated $293.6 million. The Rwandan tourism sector is characterized by a diversity of flora and fauna.

Rwanda has put in place the mechanisms to attract visitors coming either international events like meetings, conferences etc., and aim to increase the number in 2015 and beyond. There are also others who travel to Rwanda for the tourism industry. Rwanda still hosts several international conferences. The development of the city of Kigali testifies that soon it will be the regional capital of international conferences.
