Uganda or Rwanda for Chimpanzee Tracking?

Are you planning to go on a safari in Uganda or Rwanda? Chimpanzee trekking is the second among the top tourist activities in both Uganda and Rwanda. Chimpanzees are considered to be our close cousin because of sharing 98.7 percent of our genetic blueprint. Humans and chimps are also thought to share a common ancestor who lived seven to 13 million years ago. Chimpanzees are great apes who stays in African tropical forest especially Nyungwe National Park (Rwanda) and Kibale National Park among others.

In terms of prices, Uganda sells her chimpanzee trekking permit at US$200 (Kibale National Park), US$50 (Kyambura Gorge, Toro- Semuliki Game reserve and Budongo Forest) and Kalinzu Forest at US$30. On the other hand, Rwanda charges US$100 (Nyungwe National Park). While in Uganda, feel free to choose your best Chimpanzee trekking destination basing on your interest, Budget and schedule.

Compared to Nyungwe National Park in Rwanda, Kibale National Park offers the best chimpanzee trekking due to the following reasons:

  1. Kibale hosts more habituated chimpanzees than Nyungwe National park in Rwanda.
  2. Chimpanzees in Kibale national Park are easily found/ seen. The park is believed to have over 1500 individual chimpanzees.
  3. Two sessions of Chimpanzee trekking are conducted in Kibale National Park (Morning and afternoon). Therefore, the time for chimpanzee trekking in Kibale National Park can be estimated while in Nyungwe National park, the trekkers can spend full day.

Chimpanzee Habituation is done in Kibale National Park and Budongo Forest while Nyungwe National Park offers only normal chimpanzee trekking. Chimpanzee habituation enables guest to study about chimpanzees in details compare to normal trekking.

Since the time is unpredictable, visitors in Nyunwe National Park are supposed to wake up early because most of the chimpanzees are semi-habituated and they are capable of moving in distant areas than the fully habituated chimpanzee in Uganda.

Chimpanzees move in large community but separates into parties to reduce competition for food. They will then link up in the evening to make their nests for sleeping. After briefing, a group of 6 people are allocated to a certain party of Gorillas.
